Diptangshu is a Special Child. He is 12 years old, is very sharp and his listening and comprehension skills are off the charts. Diptangshu has some trouble speaking and his brain is also developing at a slower pace, but that did not stop him from acquiring these amazing keyboard skills.
When I first met Diptangshu I wasn't sure I'd be able to teach Diptangshu anything at all cause I have no experience teaching a Special Child. But his mom was willing to take a chance with me, and I didn't want to accept failure without an attempt. I usually take group sessions as it becomes cost-effective for the student and time-efficient for me. But I knew Diptangshu needed 100% attention, so I chose to take 1 on 1 sessions with him.
The first month was rough as I tried to communicate as much as possible, but since Diptangshu wouldn't reply, I didn't get any feedback and I wasn't sure if any of my teachings were getting across to him. But 2 months later, Diptangshu started showing results and I received confirmation that my method was in fact working. He understood my notes, he began enjoying our sessions and his mom told me that he is happy and enjoys playing the keyboard at home. That's when I realized that Diptangshu understood everything I was telling him. It takes 5-10 tries to get to him too like it does with every child, but I found peace in knowing that my words in class weren't hitting a dead wall. Diptangshu listens to everything in class, goes home, plays his keyboard, does all his exercises, and shows me progress each week.
That's when we began this song. It took us over a year to finish the full song, but I am extremely proud of Diptangshu, especially in this video, as he is playing the song at 190 tempo. He has played the full song as is without a single mistake. I know his accuracy sways a little, but despite that, he doesn't go off-tempo. We faced a lot of issues with left-hand right-hand coordination, chord sustain, and the speed of the song. I'll admit half of Diptangshu's finger assignment is all wrong but I didn't want to be too pedantic with that. He'll learn to fix that when he grows older.
Diptangshu is so capable now that he has also learned to play 2 songs by just listening to the mp3 files. I have no doubt he is going to be an amazing keyboardist in the future. And I'm going to teach him everything I know and help him as much as I can.
